Stephanie of the Roundabouts reported that the powder coating needed can be done in town, she will get back to us on the price, but the price is based upon how many items can be put into the rack (14 foot) at one time. We will need to have something done before next year.

From the Roundabouts
April 19th the Poker run sponsored by Salem Harley and the Roundabouts in April due to bad weather, (ice and snow) the turn out was low. There is another event in the works for June 7th as a fundraiser for hospital bills for a person in the area. More details to come.

The Roundabouts are also working on a project to get the urns from the veterans from the 1905 to 1973, that are unclaimed and give them a burial at sea with honors.

From VCB
Sandy of VCB reported that she has a new events coordinator, named Nichole LeSage, she will be in touch with us as events occur. Sandy said she has just started, and she wants her to get used to things. She also asked about the Celebration of Honor the last weekend of September, what BAMA would like to do for the Vets. The Roundabouts are thinking of doing the children's booth, with games and kite making, does anyone else have a suggestion? Tom mentioned that the Flag could be changed and wondered if anyone knew where to get another flag.Ed asked if the State still gives away flags, They would like to have a rededication ceremony.

The Art festival has been scaled back due to a short budget
Because the event was moved and fell within the previous budget. It is hoped that it will be back in Taft next year.

There will also be a Kite boarding Rodeo held in town with Pro Am, Jon Forse is the person to call with questions. Part of the event will be held in the Taft area.

Promoting the Taft area
There is someone at the Statesman Journal publishing old photos of different areas, if anyone has some to submit, please email Carla at clovato@gorge.net she will find out from Sandy where to send them.

It was suggested to start putting up web shots of our area on the web site. Carla will ask if joe wants to get involved in that. If anyone wants to submit a photo for the web site, we would gladly give you a photo credit and a link to a page if you wish.

Also perhaps BAMA, or the Taft area should get a utube thing going where the area can be showcased.

• BAMA’s insurance bill has come due it was voted that the bill be paid.

Tom announced that 64 flower baskets have been ordered. The vendor will be putting them up. A discussion was held about the plaques, and that they should in the future be aluminum in order not to have so much corrosion. Tom has a list of all of the plaques and what needs to be on them.

Tom also said that BAMA owns the actual baskets, and that they will need to be powder coated in order not to have them deteriorate. Otherwise this may be the last year for these. Stephanie Franklin of the Roundabouts said she knows of someone that does that work and will give Tom the number, so that he can get an estimate.
In the past BAMA paid for a basket for Dean Koppage and Jennifer Sears. It was decided not to this year. So these poles will be available.

Summary of Meeting
Tuesday March 11 Topics:

President Tom called meeting to order at 530 pm

By-Laws and elections

Tom began by speaking about the By-Laws for BAMA, compiled by AJA of Roots101, She went through all the old notes and created a version that can be used as a starting point. Aja has also created a list of events that BAMA was involved in, and some topics that we should probably revisit when time allows. We will put this version of the By Laws online and let members know it is there so that they may have input. Ed Kuntz made a few edits related to our numbers for voting, these are reflected in the copy online in Bold text.

We did not have enough members to have a vote for Treasurer. It was decided that the voting could be done online. Carla will send out an email asking for members vote for Treasurer and Vice-President.
There was a lengthy discussion about the totals for Barton's Students.

**Update** After counting all of the E-mail ballots Ed Kuntz is Treasurer.

Tom took all of the information both compiled by Aja and with JB’s input, as well as the rest of the checks to be deposited. He will finish compiling the totals so that we may have a check to the students within a week. It was suggested to have a digital photo taken at the time, so that the paper can write something about it, we can email it to the paper.

The Newspaper will be going around collecting for the Miracle on 51st "ad" that was in the paper. This was Janice’s job and since she is no longer with the paper, another person will be around. BAMA has gotten a past due notice regarding the ad, so we need to get this taken care of.

Other Business

  • JB let everyone know that the Pacific Grind will be offering lunches now. He has made up new menus.
  • Roadhouse101’s representative Victor said that they are making up new menus for lunch, and that there will be a Poker run sponsored by Salem Harley and the Roundabouts in April, the run will start here in Taft, ending in Florence.

Last chance to check your business information on the TAFT walking map
It is time to make sure that your information is accurate both on the Web and the walking Map. Please check online to verify that your data is correct. We would like to have the Map printed before the season begins. JB made some suggestions that we get ads for the back of the Map.

UPDATE:
Barton's Students came down to Eleanor’s Undertow and picked up a check for 300.

Summary of Meeting
Tuesday February 12 Topics:

President Tom called meeting to order at 530 pm

Tom announced that Janice has left the News Guard and that Georgia will be active with BAMA now. Said he had talked with Barton and the Journalism class has enough money for their trip. Tom suggested BAMA give a Bon Voyage party for the students plus a small donation to them from the proceeds.

Get a Clue, Sweetheart -- February 8 to 17th
Roundabouts gave a report on the Get A Clue Sweetheart event this coming week connected to Antique Week. Also they are planning a Poker Run with several other clubs the weekend of the City Wide (County Wide) Garage Sale in April.

Financial Report needed/new officers to be elected
A discussion was held regarding the financial reports and bookkeeping setup. Ed offered to take over as Treasurer as Tim is not able to make the meeting and we need proper financial reports to comply with the IRS and State. It was suggested that the members be notified and an election for Vice President ( Ed’s present position) and Treasurer be held as soon as possible.BAMA would like to vote in March, watch for an email regarding this topic.

Aja requested a copy of the by-laws so they can be updated and corrected. Tom said he would get material together and give it to Aja so she can update it and get copies to members for their input.

Web Domain
Carla reported she had paid the annual fee for the web-site. Ed moved and Tom seconded to consider the dues for 2008 paid for Once in a Blue Moon Gallery to repay Carla for her work on the web-site and cost of registration. Motion passed unanimously.

Next meeting
The next meeting for BAMA will be March 11 at Roots 101.
there may be another meeting for officers to fine tune the bylaws and officer elections. Look for new officer election at the March BAMA Meeting. Be sure your membership is current -- because only current members will be able to run, or vote.

Report from Sandy about VCB
VCB is looking at creating a kite boarding festival for the weekend of May 17 with John Force. It is still in the discussion phase but VCB feels that it would be an excellent event. The hope is to have it here in the Taft area/Siletz Bay, which they feel is safer than out in the ocean. When they have had Kite Boarders at the Kite Festival it was very well received. They are looking into prizes and other things.

VCB would like to enhance the Mud Flat Golf tournament planned in Sept. or October, to include a celebrity. Perhaps build upon the event and get more participation. They feel that it could become a great draw for the area.

VCB Had an excellent response to the 500 green traditional floats that were dropped this week. They are thinking of doing it again, Sandy said that they found a reasonable vendor for these.

Summary of Meeting
Tuesday January 15 Topics:

Miracle on 51st
The event turned out well, everyone was very pleased with the feedback they have been getting. BAMA almost broke even on light purchases, Tom and JB will be repaid for what they paid out to buy the lights, a decision still needs to be made as to what to do with the rest of the lights.

Feedback and comments for next year:

  • More lighting at the end point. Ed would like to put up icicle lights and plug in to the existing socket down on the end.
  • Tom suggested getting Santa to spend a little time with kids afterwards
  • The Roundabouts said that some of the other motorcycle groups would like to get involved next year.
  • Some people would like the event to go farther north into town, but BAMA would like to keep it down here.
  • The Lights were an issue -- there were still many places that weren't lit up, we hope for better involvement next year and believe that the prizes will help with participation.
  • The Stars were well received, would perhaps like to expand on that for next year too.
  • One thing that wasn't decided was what to do afterwards--do we pick up the stars or leave them?

.
Get a Clue, Sweetheart -- February 8 to 17th

Roundabouts reported on their progress setting this event up. The Casino will be donating some items and would like to sponsor the event with BAMA and Freeman Choppers. Janice and the Newspaper will be pulling together the flyer -- which will need to include some information about the Siletz Indians.

The event will involve a scavenger hunt. Contestants fill in the blanks on many questions regarding Lincoln City, involving going from area to area learning about the city. The event will end in a location in Taft, where prizes will be awarded. Some BAMA members would prefer to keep the event in Taft, and others thought it a good way to show BAMA’s participation in City wide events. There are still many details that are being worked out. If you have questions or would like to donate a prize for the event. Contact Stephanie Franklin at (541) 961-3065, or by email:stephanie@bpfcpa.net

Plein Air Art Festival

The event has been moved from the first weekend in October to June 21. Because the event was moved to earlier in the year, it makes this the second event in the budget year, and will be slightly scaled down. There will be artist workshops, music, but not the artist/vendors like previous years. Launa is getting bids for a tent for the next year to protect artists and musicians.

We were very happy to hear she is still trying to keep the event in Taft. Lets hope that this new date will be better for everyone.
Launa has been contacting artists all over Oregon to get these workshops going. There will be a small fee for the workshop space, but the artists gets to keep the profits for the class. This should guarantee participation.

Dues/Membership/Flower Poles

We ran out of time, but Linda would like to discus this topic at the next meeting.

Super Auction being held this weekend

The Pub Run was moved this year to the Ocean Lake area. Ed Kuntz wants to get an event called “Taste of Taft” together. Taft restaurants can come and sell samples of their food, he may need some volunteers as well. For more details or information on how you can get involved, call Ed at 994-4920.

Summary of Meeting
Tuesday December 11 Topics:

Lights Lights Lights -- and Santa with his raindeers

Janice told every one that the story will be on the front of Currents, and described the Ad. More details about the actual event were discussed. Money that is brought in by the sale of the lights is to be given to Tom for deposit.

There are still a few more stars available.

Thanks to Janice, and many others, there will be two huge prizes for the best lights for residential and business. Thank you everyone. Aja is putting these together into a basket.

Community Days

BAMA MEMBERS

At the first meeting of the Community Days Committee, the discussion came up as to how BAMA and the Taft area wanted to be part of the celebration this year. Last year we did the Pub and Poker Run. Because of the way it has been set up the committee is going to see if the Oceanlake Area Merchants wants to do it this year. The committee is trying to have each District be the sponsor of the Pub Run on a different year.

Because Easter is so early this year and it co-insides with Spring Break the Community Days has been moved to April 7th through the 12th. Community Days has been shortened because there will not be the Easter Egg hunt and Picnic because of the changed dates.

One of the suggestions that was made is that Taft area merchants and BAMA co-ordinate with the Taft Cullinary Class and sponsor a Taste of Taft at the High School. The Cullinary Class with be doing Taco Night again and the committee thought maybe the businesses in Taft would work with the class to draw attention to the area. Tuesday and Thursday have been suggested for this event. If Oceanlake does the Pub and Poker Run it will probably be on Thursday night.

Please let me know your thoughts on this idea. If you have any other suggestions on what can be done to draw people to the Taft District during the Community Days please let me know. Call me at 994-4920 or e-mail me at EKuntz7171@aol.com.

September 29 and 30

The Roundabouts for Veterans and Communities reported that they had a good turn out for their first event on 51st. Shorty, Lyn, Dan and Stephanie would like to get involved with other fund raising events with BAMA in the Taft area, and would like to have a Poker run/walk in the spring. They will e-mail BAMA with a proposed date for this event.

VCB Report -- Plein Air Art Festival
Sandy Pfaff reported that the event October 6th and 7th was wet, cold, and windy. Many of the vendors survived, and stayed for the event -- they were troupers. The music was fantastic and she was pleasantly surprised that even with the bad weather many folks came out to participate. They decided to change the quick draw slightly so that there was more time to auction off the art. You will find the paintings on display at the Glass studio until November 10th where you can place a silent bid.

Sandy was asked about other dates earlier in the Summer but there aren't any left, and the large tent idea has been brought up, but it costs 19,000 for the rental , it creates a problem for emergency vehicles getting onto the beach, and after it is taken down there are repairs needed to the cement where it is anchored down.
Roundabouts asked Sandy about getting a nonprofit, fund raising booth at the Kite festival this month. Sandy replied that due to the short deadline It wouldn't work for this year, but that it was a good Idea for the next event.

Sandy also reminded us that this is next year is the 30th Sand Castle event.

Meeting Locations:
BAMA is looking for alternative places to have meetings. If you are interested in hosting one of the meetings, please send an e-mail to clovato@gorge.net, or call 541-996-3133.

The Glass Foundry was one of the locations mentioned, Sandy said she had the key. The meeting in November will be held at the Roots 101, hosted by Aja.

  • Still looking for a volunteer to take over the Sand Castle event.
  • Need locations for future BAMA meetings.
  • Work on lighting up for the holidays/winter nights.
  • Planting Flowers/ Beautification projects in Taft.

    • Food Drives
    • Back Pack (food) Drives for kids
    • Poker walk for charity/or fallen service people/Cancer etc.
    • Baby food/supplies like diapers for those that need it

Other items:
include a Sidewalk Chalk Drawing with other events

GEOCASH (treasure hunts)
Dont forget to call the Roundabouts for future events.

Other business:
Roundabouts for Veterans and Communities would like to host a Poker run in the Taft area and will e-mail us with a date in the spring. Roadhouse 101 had offered their business as a check in point, other places could be the covered area at the end of 51st street. They are interested in being included in local events, if you think of something or an event they could participate in, give Stephanie a call at 994-3333.

Aja, from Roots 101 would like to plan some other ways to make Taft stand out as a place to visit with such things as lighting up the whole area. If each house, or business would put up Christmas lights it would make us more visible. We revisited the idea of fixing up the old light sculptures that are at the visitor center. If anyone would like to go check them out and see if they can be used for lighting displays, just stop by the VCB. Sandy mentioned that they need a lot of work -- and perhaps PGE packs to light them.

It would be nice if BAMA would be more involved in Charity events, such as canned food drives, backpack program and others. So maybe for the next meeting at the November meeting we could come up with some ideas.

A Plaque and Flowers were presented to Eleanor
Eleanor has been president of Bama for many years, she was not sure of the exact date, and she had a lot to do with the Urban Renewal Project, as well as being a driving force in the Taft area to get things accomplished.

Eleanor talked about the land that was donated, Robison Plaza, and Baileys Bait shop and Dock, which occupied the area where Mos is currently. Eleanor had a lot to do with the Memorial, Flag Pole on the end of 51 street, and of course the flower poles.

She also spoke about her old family home that was moved to 51st street, The Museum has much of this information available as well as photographs.

Eleanor has a photo of the first graduation in 1940, there were 40 graduates that first year. She also offered the photo to the newspaper to use next year for an article about graduation history.

Cake and punch was served, lots of photos were taken.

Treasurer's Report
Tim reported on BAMA'a account balance.

Further discussion on Invoicing other Flower pole adoptees, it was noted that many businesses don't have the ability to pay until they have an invoice. Linda Nelson is working on this.

Weston Hotels, may buy another pole for one of their other hotels, Maryanne from Looking glass would like an invoice to submit a request.

Sand castle T-Shirts sponsorship was discussed. Tom will be getting letters out to the sponsors for the contest for both prizes, and t-shirt sponsorship.

There are still many flower poles available for adoption.

Some of the Plaques are beginning to dissolve metal and fall off the poles. Steve thought there might be a better choice for metal that would not react with the salt air at the Marine supply store. Eleanor asked him to check it out for BAMA, and he agreed.

From the News Guard
Janice from the Newspaper, wanted everyone to know that if there is something going on in Taft to let her know so that the paper could cover it.

The Flowers are being set up on 51st street today

History Lesson from Eleanor
Eleanor talked about the original BAMA, members, businesses, and events that were held in this area. "The original purpose was to promote the area, and bring people here." Eleanor feels that the flowers are a big part of this, like in Vancouver Gardens. She would like to see members walk about and see everyone's shops and businesses, like in the past. Someone asked her why this stopped, and she replied. . . Well they just get old and die. . .

Sand Castle Contest was originally handled by the Parks and Recreation department. BAMA donated 400 dollars each year. but the event was getting smaller and smaller. BAMA took it over. Eleanor talked about the prizes and awards.

Election of officers
Members discussed organization, election of officers, and submitted nominations. Aja, Carol and Linda decided that they weren't interested in offices at this time, so this narrowed the selection down. There were more than seven members in good standing present so a vote could be taken.

Ed mentioned some of the guidelines for lights in our area. Sandy said the old lights are still available to look at to see if we can get them working and use in our area. Due to the short time left in the meeting, we will need to set up a group to do this in our next meeting.

Museum is Celebrating its 20th Anniversary
The Museum will be planning some special events during the Sand Castle Contest. At noon there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony including a time capsule, and a Punch and Judy puppet show at 1 PM. Taft Pub Run: Matt dropped off envelopes with numbers to the meeting. Each person participating in the Pub Run will receive a numbered envelope with their first drink. As they receive more drinks/cards, the bartender will write their envelope number on the card given. This will prevent switching cards. Matt also asked that all bartenders be responsible to know when to turn people away for alcohol, as there will be a lot of consumption happening, and all those folks will end up at Roadhouse 101.

Tuesday Night in Taft!!!
Open discussion about the upcoming TNT (Tuesday Night in Taft) All Taft businesses are invited to participate. The next event will be held October 17, 2006.

The first event went well, but we need to find ways to get people to walk out to 101 more. Some suggestions to improve and promote the event during the winter months included:

  • 50/50 fundraiser held in a different Taft area locations with displays from local businesses, which would change each month.
  • Lighting displays would increase visibility and give us a more unified look during the dark winter days. Sandy suggested that we take a look at some of the old lighting displays that the city has -- they need repair, but could be salvageable. Ed Kuntz asked if he could come up and take a look at them.
  • Music, and events that interest people. Aneta suggested getting the Sweet Adeline's to perform in a central location such as the glass studio.
  • Signs that are specific to the TNT event.
  • Create an event parking/starting point up at Road House 101, Anchor Inn or other location to get people to walk down the hill to the other business.
  • Hand out copies of the walking map/list of partcipants and their specials.
